Debbie and Kevin Tougas - Founders of Coursing Around Hello Parents, Grandparents, and Caretakers
My name is Debbie Beam-Tougas and I created "Coursing Around".

With over 18 years of fitness experience which included being a Certified Fitness Specialist, Aerobics Instructor, Personal Trainer and Post Exercise Therapist for a chiropractic office, I inherited a passion for teaching individuals the importance of staying active.

In 2002, I was recruited to teach the fitness component of a Government Subsidized overweight program for children ranging in age from 5-15. I still remember the first class I taught. There was a 6 year old by the name of Ruben who was approximately 40 lbs overweight. After only walking part way around the building he had to stop because he was extremely out of breath, hunched over with his hands on his knees and needed a rest. This was a wake up call for me and practically brought tears to my eyes. Also hearing what these kids had to endure on a daily basis because they were overweight was devastating and heartbreaking. At that moment I knew it was imperative to help find a way for kids to be active, social and have fun all at the same time. My challenge was to keep the attention of kids from ages 5 to 15 for 45 min with just blacktop and at times, an outdoor basketball hoop. So with some sidewalk chalk and an imagination "Coursing Around" was born.

In today's society with all the hand held devices, video games, computers and both parents working, our kids have lost the art of "Outdoor Play" and more importantly "Connecting" with their parents! Coursing Around is just that "Outdoor Activity" for all Parents to enjoy and their kids will follow.

My dream is that children of all sizes, shapes, gender and ethnicities will use Coursing Around to learn that exercising can be fun and accomplished in many ways. It is proven that the earlier we teach our kids to exercise the better chance they will have of being active throughout their lives which equals a healthier life.

What better gift can we give our kids than Exercise, fun, self-esteem and a healthy lifestyle for a successful future?
